Pregnancy and Chronic Kidney Disease

Should patients with chronic kidney disease be pregnant? What’s the harm if patients with chronic kidney disease are pregnant? Can women with chronic kidney disease have a baby after they treat it? These are questions which chronic kidney disease patients asked especially women. 

Firstly, generally, women are not suggested to have a baby after they find out that they have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Most women will have a higher blood pressure after they are pregnant. However, pregnant woman can not take in medicine which is used to decline blood pressure freely, for it will do great harm to the little fetus. High blood pressure will in turn worsen their chronic kidney disease. So vicious circle takes place. 

Secondly, after women are pregnant, all the physical function will be changed in the whole system’s organs. The blood circulation amount increased by more than 30%, so the blood which flows through the kidney will also increased accordingly. What’s worse, because of increased compensation, the size of the kidney also increased. 

Thirdly, if parents have polycystic kidney disease, their baby may also have possibility to get it. Generally, it is believed that if one parent has polycystic kidney disease, the baby will have 25% of possibility to get it and if both of the parents have polycystic kidney disease, their baby will have 50% of the possibility to get this disease. 

So from the above, we can get a conclusion that women who are with chronic kidney disease had better not be pregnant. Then another question comes: when can they have a baby?　According to what kidney disease experts say, after treatment, they can consider having a baby. The premise is as follows: 

Firstly, figure out what is treat mean. It means that all the index or levels turn normal such as protein in urine, red blood cells in blood, blood urea nitrogen, urea acid and creatinine, etc. 

Secondly, chronic kidney patients had better have baby half a year after they stop the medicine which is used for the treatment of chronic kidney disease. Much medicine which is used to treat chronic kidney disease is harmful to the kidney.
